January Edition: Things I am Loving

I often get asked about things that are helping me in my studies. These items include, books (both school related and fiction), food, fitness, conscious brands, podcasts and apps/tools. Also, with the @ScholarCulture community continuously growing, scholars often share with me some of the things they are loving too. Sometimes I try them out and if I end up loving them, I want to keep you all updated. Below you will find some of the things I am loving at the moment and things that are helping me through grad school.

Books

School Related

The Caring Self by Clare L. Stacey

My research involves labour/work, as well as care work. For these reasons, I’ve really enjoyed this book by Stacey who shares her research with home care aids. My dissertation research also involves ethnography and Stacey’s methods included observations and interviews as well, to explore the physical and emotional labour associated with the care of others. Highly recommend for anyone who is interested in work/labour, care work or ethnography.

Fiction

My Favourite Half Night Stand by Christina Lauren

This fiction novel was such a light and enjoyable read. A modern day romance novel that features young professors, which was super relatable. It made me laugh out loud and was a nice way to escape before bed.

Food

Oatmeal

This one may seem a bit boring but oatmeal has been making my mornings a breeze. I have ate oatmeal for breakfast every day in January and it has been fantastic. First and foremost, it’s affordable. Secondly, it’s one less decision I have to make in the morning. Third, it is satiating and feels me up until lunch. And lastly, I get to add in whatever I want; different fruits, nuts and some of my favourite superfoods like maca and chia seeds (which I will likely be addressing in upcoming months).

Fitness

Yoga with Adriene on YouTube, 30 months Challenge ‘Dedicate’

I’ve always loved Yoga with Adriene on YouTube. She offers free yoga that doesn’t take up too much time. It’s perfect for beginners and she doesn’t take it too seriously. At the beginning of January she came out with a 30 day challenge called Dedicate. It really held me accountable to move every single day.

Conscious Brands

Lush

I’ve been making an effort to buy from brands who are Canadian, local, equitable, natural, environmentally friendly or focus on some type of impact. Lush is one of my favourite brands, although they are made in the UK, they are against animal testing, seem to treat their employees equitably, buy ethically, and give back charitably. Plus their products are amazing because they are hand made with the freshest ingredients. I encourage you to check them out.

Podcasts

TSC Him & Her Podcast

The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast has been a favourite of mine for a while now. They talk about wellness, motivation, blogging, branding – really a wide variety of things. But there was one episode in particular that really motivated me this month. Check it out here.

Apps/Tools

Grammarly

Again, another app that I have been loving for a while – Grammarly. It’s a free writing app that helps with your editing and grammar in e-mails and documents.  A must for grad students.

I have also added a summary page of the ‘Things I am Loving‘ that I will be updating each month. However, I will also be posting a corresponding blog post to talk about each item more in depth (just like this one). So stay tuned 🙂

Now I want to hear from you!

  • What things in these categories have you been loving?
  • And are there any other categories you want me to share?

Until next time,

Christine xo
